Rage. Let’s Talk About It.

Rage. Let’s talk about it. Cause it sure as hell feels like the #anger has been present lately. The kind of anger that makes no sense, it simply bubbles up like volcanic tar until you can’t see anything but red. Lately though, the rage has shown herself deeper and harder, like she’s been awakened from an unpleasant slumber. Have you felt it? The bone-rattling, stomach-churning, chest-burning #rage? I have, and she feels ancestral. Rather than resist this #emotion, though, I’m listening. I share with you that my anger has personified as #Sekhmet, an ancient Egyptian goddess that embodies divine rage and anger. I’ve been sitting with her for weeks now, listening. This is what I’ve learned so far: ? #Anger is a “bodyguard emotion,” protecting our deepest wounds. When we experience humiliation or shame or unworthiness, Anger rises up to defend and shield these raw emotions. Anger, then, has been a great defender and protector. ? Anger, when channeled and focused thoughtfully, can be a most passionate, unstoppable force. There’s no backing down when you’re in the vibration of #rage. We insist and persist until we’re heard. Can you imagine channeling that energy towards possibility, equality, and healing? Anger, then, can be ally and guide. ?I’m learning (messily, I might add) that I no longer need the #rage to defend me, I am safe. I am learning to welcome Sehkmet when she arrives and shares with me. I treat her as an invited guest and I listen. I feel her and I move with her until she is complete. These days, I channel her into #kickboxing and #dance. I am learning to give anger a mindful outlet rather than ignore her then explode in not-so-great ways. When I welcome her in, she teaches. When I resist her, she rages. I share this to invite you to listen: If rage and anger are real for you right now, ask yourself, “What’s the primary emotion here?” Check in with yourself and listen: what is beneath the anger? What is anger protecting you from? What part of you is feeling unsafe and gets to be loved now? Listen. Anger is a wise teacher if you let her be, just like every single emotion has the potential to be a mentor and friend. Listen. ?
